LA_fig1Fig. 1: Louisiana Forestry Association’s wood and paper products posterINTRODUCTION: In 2010 the Louisiana Forestry Association (LFA) produced a large-scale state map showing wood and paper products produced in each parish of the state. This poster was one project of a larger outreach program with an objective to continue the Stand for Forestry theme that the Association had begun the previous year with a special logo, radio messages, and print ads that focused attention on how important forestry was to the state’s economy. Despite the economic downtown and closure of some facilities, trees are still the number one crop in Louisiana, and manufacturing jobs in the forestry sector are an important part of the state’s economy as well.

GENERAL FEATURES: The LFA SFI State Implementation Committee (SIC) drafted a subcommittee to complete the outreach project. The Committee worked with the spreadsheet of facilities produced by the Louisiana Forest Products Development Center based at Louisiana State University. LFA staff called the primary facilities to assure the accuracy of the information and then made random checks of secondary markets to ascertain that there was at least one business located in a parish in order to have the furniture/millwork logo on the map. The mill categories on the poster are: (1) OSB/particle board; (2) Engineered wood; (3) Treated wood; (4) Plywood/veneer; (5) Pallets; (6) Lumber/ties; (7) Paper; and (8) Furniture/millwork. The legend on the map shows a symbol for each category. The background on the printed map shows a scenic forest photograph and bullet points about forestry, along with the logos for the Association and the Stand for Forestry theme.

APPLICATION: The committee gave the posters to legislators during the Rural Caucus luncheon in Baton Rouge. Framed posters were presented to the Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry, the State Forester, and the chairman of the Rural Caucus. Several legislators who represent forested areas now have these posters framed in their offices. The posters were also distributed among SFI companies and were given to teachers on the annual Forestry Teachers’ Tour. The project continues now with a quarterly picture page in LFA’s Forests & People magazinethat focuses on one particular plant and its products. Another project is underway to produce a portable printed booklet that details more of the information.

SPECIFICATIONS AND COST: Costs included graphic design work and printing. The initial order was for 500 24x36-inch full color glossy posters at a cost of $1.40 each.
